Caring for the Caregiver

Being the caregiver for an elderly person can be a rewarding but incredibly stressful experience. As a caregiver, it is important to find ways to relieve your stress.

Why Caregivers Feel Stressed

Regularly taking care of others can become very stressful and may manifest in the following ways:

  • Anger
  • Denial
  • Isolation
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Exhaustion
  • Sleeplessness
  • Irritability
  • Lack of concentration
  • Physical illness
  • Financial problems
  • Loss of employment
  • Elder abuse

It is normal to have feelings of stress every once in a while, but it is not healthy to live in a state of constant stress. And, it is not okay for those feelings of stress to manifest into any of the items listed above. That is why it is so important to find a healthy way to relieve yourself of stress.

How to Relieve Stress

There’s no doubt that being a caregiver is a stressful position to hold. And, it can be hard to balance with work, a social life, and having a family. As a caregiver, there are different ways that you can reduce stress. Here are some ideas:

  • Seek formal support services in your area. McGregor PACE is a nursing home alternative that allows seniors to live at home while providing them the support they need either at home or in one of our facilities. Other options for support services include adult day cares, homemaker services, home health care, and respite services.
  • Maintain a healthy diet. By changing your diet and maintaining a healthy diet, you may become healthier which can help reduce stress in your life. Eating right can give you more energy which can lead you to feel happier and less stressed overall.
  • Eliminate unhealthy habits. If you smoke or are involved in another unhealthy habit, quitting that habit and replacing it with something healthier can help you feel better. Knowing that you have an unhealthy habit can contribute to stress in your life.
  • Make time for yourself. When caring for someone else, it may seem as though your life revolves around that at all times. It is important to take some time for yourself so that you can relax without having to worry about the person who you are caring for an amount of time.

There are many other ways to relieve stress. It is important for both you and the person that you care for you to not feel stressed all of the time which is why is it critical to find an activity that helps you reduce stress.
